Facebook handed Russia-linked ads over to Mueller under search warrant

Facebook said last week it found about US$100,000 (RM419,200) in ad spending connected to fake accounts probably run from Russian Federation.

She noted that Mueller dis not sought a search warrant to target Facebook as a company instead he would be interested in exploring the specific accounts.

In those briefings, Facebook spoke only in generalities about the ad buys, leaving some committee members feeling frustrated with Facebook's level of cooperation.

Facebook Inc, under pressure over its role in possible Russian meddling in last year's US presidential election, said it plans an election integrity initiative to protect Canada's next vote from cyber threats.

According to legal experts quoted in the report, the revelation has enormous implications for the trajectory of Mueller's investigation into Russia's election interference.

Russian Federation has denied any involvement in the election - and President Donald Trump slammed the Mueller probe as a "witch hunt".

Rangappa who is now an associate dean at Yale Law School, elaborated that in order to obtain a search warrant a prosecutor needs an approval of a judge to believe in crime has been committed.

The scope of the border security measures that would be included in an eventual bill could also undercut Democratic support. But if anyone thinks these feel-good resolutions will substantively change public policy, they must be dreaming.

On Saturday, Mariotti said, the Facebook search warrant "means that Mueller has concluded that specific foreign individuals committed a crime by making a "contribution" in connection with an election".

"There have been a lot of questions since the 2016 United States election about Russian interference in the electoral process", said Alex Stamos, Chief Security Officer at Facebook, in a blog post.

Former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti echoed Rangappa's statement.

Mariotti wrote, "It also means that he has evidence of that crime that convinced a federal magistrate judge of two things: first, that there was good reason to believe that the foreign individual committed the crime".

"Platforms like Facebook and Twitter really need to put technical measures in place that would prevent the spread of fake information or the creation of groups that may promote hate speech", Gruzd said.

Facebook gave Mueller and his team copies of ads and related information it discovered on its site linked to a Russian troll farm, as well as detailed information about the accounts that bought the ads and the way the ads were targeted at American Facebook users, a source with knowledge of the matter told CNN.

Further, the House Intelligence Committee is seeking an interview with Brad Parscale, the digital director for Trump's campaign, who worked closely with Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
