Egyptian court issues preliminary death sentence against 7 members of Matrouh 'Libya terrorist cell'

Court upholds lifetime sentence against Morsi over spying for Qatar

The Court of Cassation, Egypt's highest appeal court, rejected the former president's appeal and said the ruling is "final and unappealable", state-run MENA news agency reported.

But it upheld a life sentence - 25 years in prison in Egypt - on the charge of leading an illegal organisation, his lawyer Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsud told AFP.

Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Saturday seven members of what is known in the media as the "Libya terrorist cell" to death on a number of terror-related charges.

Death sentences in Egypt are subject to review by the country's mufti as the official interpreter of Islamic law, although his verdict is not legally binding.

This is the second time that Morsi got confirmed sentence.

Qatar was a main backer of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood movement while he was in power between 2012 and July 2013.

Egyptian-Qatari ties have been strained since Morsi's military ouster, due in large part to the Gulf nation's support of the Muslim Brotherhood group, which has now been branded a terrorist organization by the Egyptian government.

Morsi served as Egypt's first democratically-elected president after the fall of former dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Hundreds of the group received death and life sentences, mostly over violence, murder and spying charges.

Morsi received the original sentence in June 2016 after being found guilty of using his post to leak classified documents to Qatar and selling them to al-Jazeera channel.

Morsi has been also convicted in other cases.

Of the seven defendants, three were sentenced to death in absentia, the officials said.

On the Brotherhood page, the members commented that the verdicts are "an honor", adding it won't prevent creation of thousands of likewise courageous men.
