North Korea is closer than ever to its goal of building a military arsenal that can viably target both USA troops in Asia and the American homeland. Both of North Korea's patron nations insist that Pyongyang has legitimate grievances that should be settled through negotiations with the USA and South Korea.

The Trump administration appears to be reaching its limit with North Korea.

"Mattis and Onodera agreed that the North Korean provocation called for a strong demonstration of a unified front between the US, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, and agreed on the importance of robust trilateral defence cooperation between the three nations", he said.

Multiple top Trump advisers said Friday there are military options available for dealing with the North Korea crisis, despite some experts and former Trump allies saying that there are no good options for the region. "The members of the Security Council strongly condemned these launches, condemned further North Korea for its outrageous actions, and demanded that North Korea immediately cease all such actions", the Security Council said in a statement after an emergency meeting.

President Donald Trump has responded to North Korea's most recent missile launch with a vow that the United States and its allies will not be intimidated. "Now, it's not what we would prefer to do", McMaster said.

North Korea fired the intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan that landed in the Pacific, responding to new United Nations sanctions with its furthest-ever missile flight. After the new sanctions were imposed Monday, North Korea called for the Security Council to be broken up, accusing it of being a "tool of evil" working for the United States.

BENNETT: But unlike past presidents, Trump is promoting his America-first agenda.

The missile fired Friday morning Asia time flew over Japan's northern island of Hokkaido before landing in the Pacific.

UN Security Council condemns North Korea missile launch
The statement also welcomed "a peaceful and comprehensive solution" to the North Korean nuclear issue through dialogue. The missile Friday morning passed over Japanese airspace before landing in the Pacific Ocean.

And what have the USA and its allies achieved?

South Korean President Moon Jae-in also convened a National Security Council meeting to monitor the situation and prepare for any emerging threats from North Korea.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for new sanctions "to be firmly imposed" in response to the latest North Korean missile test that violated Japanese airspace.

"If North Korea continues to walk down this path, it has no bright future". North Korea has launched dozens of missiles under Kim Jong Un's leadership to accelerate a weapons programme created to give it the ability to target the United States with a powerful, nuclear-tipped missile.

Haley predicted that the US approach at the United Nations summit would be "solid" and "strong", as diplomats and top USA officials tackle global challenges. North Korea also has the world's largest standing army. "China and Russian Federation must indicate their intolerance for these reckless missile launches by taking direct actions of their own", Tillerson said.

Diplomacy on the North Korean nuclear standoff has been stalled for years.

"For those who have been commenting about the lack of a military option, well, there is a military option".
