Federer comes through Ferrer test to reach the last eight at the Rogers Cup

Roger Federer used a dominant service game to beat Dutchman Robin Haase 6-3 7-6 (5) in Montreal on Saturday, setting up a Rogers Cup final against German Alexander Zverev.

Ferrer lost his nerve when serving out at 5-3, but Federer failed to make the most of the reprieve and handed the break straight back to surrender the first set.

Federer posted his seventh consecutive win over the Spaniard and improved his season record to 34-2.

Denis Shapovalov of Canada celebrates after defeating Adrian Mannarino of France during quarter-final play at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament Friday August 11, 2017 in Montreal.

The 30-year-old Haase said he always believed he could be competitive at this level, but he had to overcome a serious knee injury early in his career. You know, he had a good start, I had a better finish.

Federer has won all seven career matches and taken all 16 sets against the 29-year-old Bautista Agut.

And Shapovalov nearly struck in the seventh game, but he wasted three break points at 0-40.

With little to choose between the payers, it was to be Hasse who would blink first in the opening set, and in the most crucial of games at 5-4 down.

"I struggled against Ferrer early on, so today was better".

In the second set, Schwartzman was the first to drop a game, and it was one he never should have.

Having performed so admirably to force a tie-break, Haase started slowly but again showed his character by winning four points in a row from 4-1 down. It set up a wild final game, with Shapovalov saving two match points and Zverev erasing three break points before it ended with a misfired backhand by the Canadian. In the victory, Haase won 84 percent of his first serve points and 31 percent of his second serve points. The clay king is looking to reclaim his No. 1 ranking in ATP by winning this year's Roger Cup.

The two southpaws were on serve in the second when play halted 20 minutes for a light rain but, when it resumed, the crowd sprang to life, chanting "let's go Denis" on the changeovers as he broke serve and then served out the set.

Federer said he goes out to win every match he plays, but admitted there were times when he felt sorry for his opponents. The top seeded Nadal and second seeded Federer cruised through their matches on Wednesday.

Ferrer had also come through two tough matches at this event, beating Britain's Kyle Edmund and world number 17 Jack Sock, and he applied immediate pressure on Federer from the off.
