Saturday's draw certainly proved that, for all of Liverpool's quality going forward, they are still weak at the back, and despite Carragher's pleas, signing Van Dijk is of paramount importance.

Liverpool drew 3-3 in their opening Premier League game against Watford yesterday, conceding two goals from set pieces.

Van Dijk, reportedly valued at around £60million by Southampton, handed in a transfer request last week in a move to hopefully force a move away. But Redknapp said a defender of Van Dijk's calibre, would instantly improve the team's performance at set-pieces, as he is a "leader". That's what I think and that's why he wants to spend £60m on him.

"He's facing the ball, he's not really turning his shoulder and you can see Okaka come into that area".

He said: "You've had a pre-season and nothing's changing". What have they been working on?'

Stefano Okaka scored with a header at the near-post, after drifting between Liverpool players Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip.

"One man is not going to [make a difference], the position of the full-backs in general play leaves the centre-backs exposed".

"But I don't care how good a centre-back, getting exposed on counter-attacks, you've got to cover the full width of the pitch, it's nearly impossible".

'It's nearly impossible. What defenders can do that?' Van Dijk will improve it, yeah, but one man can't change it all'.

"It's the setup of the manager, he's been here now 18 months: set-pieces are the worst in the league, conceded the most goals of the top six, there's still no change". The way Liverpool are set up - set piece wise - they will always concede goals. It's not just players making one mistake, the whole system looks wrong and set-pieces are a mess.

Redknapp also had his say on the Liverpool defending.

"I don't care who is at centre-back, you can't do that much to stop those goals".

'I think those two (Lovren and Matip) are not good enough. Carragher argued that it was something the team need to work on collectively, Redknapp reckoned that Virgil van Dijk would help shore up their leaky defence.

The former Reds midfielder did, though, have some positive words for Sadio Mane, who made it 1-1 with as superb finish and threatened regularly, as he likened the Senegalese to former Arsenal star Thierry Henry.
