Federer overcomes sloppy start to down Ferrer

19-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer remained on course to lift his 27th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title, as he booked his place in the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup following a straight-sets victory over Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut here on Saturday.

Haase battled gamely, particularly in an entertaining second set that went all the way, but was ultimately beaten 6-3 7-6 (7-5) as Federer earned the latest triumph of a sensational 2017 season. Stretching back to 2006 and 2007, when Federer wore monogrammed blazers onto the court, followed by the gold piping cardigan of years to come, he has become one with the image of Centre Court and its dark green stands.

Polansky held his next two service games but never looked like breaking Federer's serve as the veteran moved into a 5-2 lead. It was the fourth time in five matches he lost the first set, but this time there was no coming back.

Shapovalov fell behind 3-0 before winning seven of the final eight points of the third set tiebreaker.

Federer had dominated the pair's previous meetings, winning all 16 of them while dropping just six sets to the Spaniard.

In Sunday's final, he will face the victor of the second semi-final between 18-year-old Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., and 20-year-old Alexander Zverev of Germany. "I'm going to try and recover and enjoy the win today before preparing for tomorrow's match".

But this time Denis Shapovalov didn't get the win.

Federer's 93 titles and 1114 wins also dwarf Haase's 2 titles and 186 wins.

"I think those young players don't quite know what to expect, and (neither) do I, because nobody quite knows", said Federer.

Both the Rogers Cup and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati are tune-up events for the final Grand Slam tournament on the tennis calendar, the US Open, which gets under way on August 28.

Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov shocked top seeded Rafael Nadal to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP Montreal Masters tournament, temporarily spoiling the Spaniard's chances of returning to world number one.

"Almost every tournament I've played this year there has been a rain delay so at this point I just have to laugh because I feel like it is following me", she said during a courtside interview after the three hour 26 minute match. Her served out the set in the ninth game. It appears to have been taken at the Rogers Cup nine years ago, when Shapovalov, in the red baseball cap, was nine years old. I haven't played him that much yet. Number one for me was anyway something for later in the year. Federer promptly went in for the kill, attacking the net and opening up the court to clinch victory with a deft volley.

"I played a lot of good matches, especially yesterday against (seventh-seeded Grigor) Dimitrov", Haase said.
