Marijuana Use Linked to Increased Risk of Dying from High Blood Pressure

The study did not ascertain frequency of use, or if a respondent even continued to use marijuana at all through the documented time period.

The researchers also controlled for cigarette use, age, race/ethnicity, alcohol use, diagnosis of hypertension and other relevant variables.

According to Barbara A Yankey, the lead author and a PhD student in the School of Public Health, Georgia State University, Atlanta, various steps had been taken in the U.S towards the legalisation and decriminalisation of marijuana and as a result, there might occur a considerable rise in the rates of use of recreational marijuana.

As longitudinal data on the use of marijuana was not available, a retrospective follow-up study of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was designed by the researchers of the study. Death from hypertension included multiple causes, such as primary hypertension and hypertensive renal disease. That's compared to people who have never used marijuana.

A total of 1,213 participants were considered for the analyses. To measure the duration of use, this age was then subtracted from their current age. Combining both datasets, the researchers estimated the associations of marijuana use, and duration of use, with death from hypertension, heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease. 34% of them used neither marijuana nor cigarettes, 21% used only marijuana, 20% used marijuana and smoked cigarettes, 16% used marijuana and were past-smokers, 5% were past-smokers and 4% only smoked cigarettes.

Blue Jays doomed early by Yankees' long bombs
Blue Jays: Toronto placed RHP Cesar Valdez (shoulder) on the 10-day DL and recalled RHP Leonel Campos from Triple-A Buffalo. Montgomery in 21 starts is 7-6 with an ERA of 4.05 in 115 innings and just 36 innings shy of a career high he set in 2016.

In 2005 to 2006, the study's participants were asked if they had ever used marijuana and, if so, how old they were when they first started.

A Quinnipiac University poll found 94 percent of USA voters think medical marijuana should be legal.

Yankey said that they found that marijuana users had a greater than three-fold risk of death from hypertension and the risk increased with each additional year of use. However, governments globally may be making a mistake since a new research study has revealed that marijuana can increase cardiovascular risks. It determined that pot use was more associated with hypertension than cigarette use was. "Emergency rooms have reported cases of angina and [MIs] after marijuana use". This study attempted to work out the risk of various heart diseases from smoking marijuana, but its findings are far from definite.

Obviously the study had many limitations, but the study authors said the finding jibes with known effects of cannabis.

This risk increases by more than one time for every year of cannabis use, a study found.
