US cargo ship runs aground in Northern Michigan waterway

The Coast Guard says the 629′ US cargo ship ran aground on the north side of Sugar Island Wednesday night at approximately 11:40pm.

A merchant freighter ran aground downstream from the Soo Locks of the St. Mary's River on Wednesday, Aug. 9 around 11:40 p.m.

The Coast Guard, he said, is waiting for the ship's owner to submit a plan for how to safely get the vessel off the ground.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there are no signs of pollution coming from the stable, grounded vessel. The ship was not carrying any cargo, which made freeing it less complicated.

On Friday, up to 17 vessels were waiting to go up or down the river.

As a precaution, boom remains in place on the surface of the water near the front of the vessel to protect the environment.

Contracted divers conducted an initial assessment of the vessel's stern and determined that it is structurally sound. Grand River Navigation is also finalizing a salvage plan and will present it to the U.S. Coast Guard for review and approval.

USCG is investigating why Calumet ran aground. The Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay is scheduled to arrive on scene Friday afternoon to provide support.

The grounding did not appear to cause any significant damage to the Calumet.
