Many Guam Residents Aren't Worried About North Korea

The Strategic Command determines if the missile poses a threat to U.S. satellites in space.

The Pacific Command, headquartered in Hawaii, determines if the missile poses a threat to Japan, South Korea, Guam or Hawaii.

According to the sources, the PAC-3 missiles will be placed in: Kaita, Hiroshima Prefecture; Izumo, Shimane Prefecture; Kochi, Kochi Prefecture; and Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. It was also to deploy the anti-missile system in neighbouring Ehime, NHK said. He did not elaborate.

"No missile is going to land on Guam", Peterson said Thursday.

"(The North has) improved their missile launch capacity, but that's neither here nor there", he said.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force has sent an Aegis destroyer installed with the SM-3 interceptor in the Sea of Japan to be on guard against North Korea missiles.

North Korean state media has reported that the country is considering plans to strike Guam this month. USA allies Japan and South Korea quickly vowed a strong reaction if the North were to follow through.

The drill coincides with the four-day "Ulji Freedom Guardian" military manoeuvres on August 21-24, which are held yearly and include joint exercises by the United States and South Korean armed forces, as well as drills for emergencies. The annual exercises, called Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, are expected to run from August 21 to 31.

In Guam's capital Hagatna, residents were unruffled by Pyongyang's rhetoric.
