Arsenal had to rally from 2-1 and 3-2 down in an action-packed Premier League opener that was decided by Giroud's thumping header off the crossbar in the 85th minute at the Emirates.

"But I don't want him to go".

It brings him level with former Arsenal favourite Kevin Campbell, who breached Manchester City swiftly at Highbury in 1994, while Colombia great Faustino Asprilla also punished Sheffield Wednesday in the second minute of the 1997-98 campaign while at Newcastle United.

Arsenal's new signing Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette took 94 seconds to make his mark with a header from Mohamed Elneny's curling cross to equal the record for the fastest opening goal in a Premier League season.

"We kept going and the spirit of the team was absolutely outstanding", he said. Both Ramsey and Giroud played big parts in the win for Arsenal, as both ended up on the scoresheet.

An admiring Wenger said Giroud was "in his prime" and "at the top of his game".

"But the top seven, we're going to be in the four competitions, so there's no advantage for any one of us".

Wenger's gamble to field a back three featuring one recognised centre-back collapsed in a display of complete defensive incompetence.

"I feel as well that the goals we conceded, we can work together to get rid of that because one was a corner, one was a ball we lost in the build up and the third goal was on a corner again, so we conceded two goals on corners".

"We're gonna win the league!" sang the Leicester fans and they nearly had a third goal to cheer when Okazaki's header from Christian Fuchs's cross bounced just wide of Cech's left-hand post.

"We were quite good last year on corners and with a bit of work we can get that out of our system", added Wenger, who has been given another two years in charge of Arsenal.

If you have never seen a Premier League game and chose to start watching this season, take note that this isn't a normal situation.

"For a first game, it was a top-quality game".

"You want the Premier League to be the best league in the world and I think it has to produce this kind of game to produce interest and quality".

Carragher said: "Unfortunately, we're talking about referees again".

"Obviously I knew that I was going to have a chance so we tried to push", he said. He has scored seven Premier League goals as a substitute since August 2016; three more than any other player. We encourage him to do that.
