Jim Mattis says war with North Korea would be catastrophic

The Latest Trump praises Xi for new UN sanctions

Though dwarfed by the U.S.' military, North Korea's is still one of the largest in the world, with 1.2 million active service members, nuclear weapons, and tens of thousand of artillery at its disposal.

The visit came amid rising tensions between the nations over a series of North Korean missile tests and increased aggression that prompted President Trump to threaten the Asian nation with "fire and fury".

North Korea on Thursday announced a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the US Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to US bombers.

In response to that "fire and fury" threat, North Korea said its military is preparing to conduct a test firing of four missiles that would fly over Japan and land in waters near the USA territory of Guam. Trump threatened North Korea with "fire and fury" in return.

Earlier Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson defended Trump's remarks.

Speaking with reporters in Mountain View, California, Mattis said his responsibility was to have military options available, but that the American effort was focused on diplomacy.

'His view and the view of the administration is that the way to resolve the situation with North Korea ... is through these economic sanctions.

China has urged the United States and North Korea on Friday to be "cautious" with their words and actions after the two sides stepped up their bellicose rhetoric over Pyongyang's weapons programme.

Britain's UN ambassador said the United Kingdom "stands shoulder to shoulder with the United States" in tackling the nuclear threat from North Korea and making sure it can not pursue its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

The former four-star general declined to provide any additional insight to a statement released Wednesday, warning that the North's continued provocations - including alleged plans for an attack against USA forces in Guam by Pyongyang - "would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people".

"The tragedy of war is well enough known", Mattis said, responding to a question about the human toll of a nuclear confrontation between the DPRK and the U.S.

Mattis has called the possibility of war with North Korea "catastrophic" in the past, on CBS News' "Face the Nation".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is expected to deliver a speech next week to mark Liberation Day, when the Korean peninsula secured freedom from the rule of Japan.
