Iran's parliament on Sunday approved an increased budget for the country's ballistic missile programme and the regional operations of its Revolutionary Guard, in defiance of United States sanctions imposed last month over Tehran's testing of new missile technology.

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the parliament's vote to approve the motion was just the first step, adding that if Washington proceeds with its anti-Tehran policies, the law will take effect. The parliament's majority voted for the bill, which was a response to the USA new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

It mandates the government to allocate an additional Dollars 260 million for the "development of the missile programme" and the same amount to the Revolutionary Guards' foreign operations wing, the Quds Force, state news agency IRNA said.

After the result was announced, lawmakers shouted: "Death to America".

The US legislation would impose mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them.

The Quds Force leads Iran's military role in Syria and Iraq.

Trump repeatedly threatened to tear up what he once called "the worst deal ever", but last month he backed away from a key campaign promise to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.

He praised the bill, saying it "was designed wisely so that it does not violate the (nuclear deal) and provide excuses for opposing sides".

"Iran boasts potential and actual options to confront hostile USA actions".

Iranian parliamentarians responding to the recent United States sanctions on Tehran have tasked the government with allocating about $300 million to Quds force, the foreign arm of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Abbas Araghchi, a deputy foreign minister and senior nuclear negotiator on hand for the vote, said a moderate President Hassan Rouhani's government would support the bill.
