100-year-old Antarctic fruitcake looks (almost) edible

Hundred-year-old fruitcake found in Antarctic hut

Conservationists working at the Antarctic Heritage Trust have discovered a 106-year-old fruitcake in an old hut at Cape Adre.

The fruit cake was found still in its wrapper and Huntley & Palmers tin. The fruitcake is one of almost 1,500 artifacts recovered from Cape Adare.

Conservators from the Trust have been working on restoring and documenting nearly 1500 artifacts from the Cape for the past year.

Scientists from the new Zealand heritage trust Antarctic hut at Cape Adare in hand was a unusual find - a 106-year-old pie.

According to experts, the cupcake was part of the provisions of the Northern party of the expedition, "Terra Nova", the members of which lived at Cape Adair.

It has been documented that he took this specific brand of fruitcake with him.

The extreme cold climate may have helped in preservation of the fruitcake.

To prepare the recently-discovered cake for its return, the conservators have removed all the dust from the tin, repaired the torn paper on the exterior, and applied stabilizing chemicals to both the tin and the fruitcake, which was otherwise, incredibly, in "excellent condition".

"Deacidification of the tin label and some physical fix to the torn paper wrapper and tin label was also carried out", the Trust said.

Lizzie Meeks, the trust's artefacts manager, said the cake was found among a stock of food supplies abandoned by...
