One of the buses was carrying 47 passengers from Chamba to Mandi while the second bus, was carrying about 8-10 passengers from Katra to Manali when the accident occurred.

Due to frequent landslides travelling by road in Himachal is risky especially along the Chandigarh-Manali national highway between Pandoh-Aut stretch, along Pathankot-Mandi national highway between Jogindernagar and Mandi stretch and along Chandigarh-Shimla highway especially between Parwanoo and Solan.

Mangled remains of the second bus bound for Katra in Jammu were retrieved. "A bus had also rolled down to almost 800 m from the National Highway and four people have been rescued from the debris". Three of the eight persons on the bus died.

"A few boulders started rolling down just ahead of the disaster".

Some houses and slum dwellings were also destroyed in the landslide, which followed days of heavy rain in the Himalayan region.
