Approval of US Congress by Republicans Falls to New 2017 Low of 16% - Poll

CBS Poll: Americans Frustrated with Congress

Republican approval of Congress was at a high of 50 percent after President Trump's inauguration in February but gradually fell in the months following.

"Despite their party controlling both chambers of Congress, only one in six Republicans (16%) approve of the job Congress is doing, the lowest yet in 2017". Seven in 10 Americans disapprove of Republican leaders in the House of Representatives and in the Senate based on their performances so far. And not only do 78 percent of Americans want the Trump administration to do what it can to make ObamaCare work, but that includes 52 percent of Republicans and 51 percent of Trump supporters.

Republicans themselves are evenly split 44% to 44% on whether the GOP-led Congress has been a success or failure so far.

GOP supporters' approval of Congress dropped 12 points from July, while overall approval by United States adults decreased four points, also to 16 percent. They say the GOP-dominated Congress has so far failed Americans.

Democrats' approval of Congress is at 12 percent which is consistent with their low ratings for Congress throughout 2017 from around 10 to 19 percent. Democrats appear to be more positive about the way their leaders in Congress have performed so far.

Congress left for its August recess without passing any sweeping, comprehensive legislation, failing in its attempt to pass something on health care and leaving tax reform on the docket. Democratic-leaning independents gave their leaders in Congress a 50% pass mark while Republican-leaning independents say their leaders in Congress have performed below average with a 39 percent approval rating. Its failure to pass the health care overhaul bill largely contributed to its unpopularity.

August 3rd - 6th Glen Mills, PA conducted this nationwide poll of 1,111 adults at random on behalf of CBS.

This month's survey again finds more of the public holding a favorable view of the Affordable Care Act than an unfavorable one (52% vs. 39%). Most Democrats (70%) and independents (59%) favor the bi-partisan approach, though almost half of Republicans (49%) and Trump supporters (46%) want Republicans to continue pursuing their own plan to repeal and replace the law. Margin of error is +/-4%.
