North Korea's Nuclear Threat Doesn't Phase Samsung's Shareholders

North Korea Says The U.S. is a Little Lump They Can Turn Into Jelly

Pyongyang's state-run KCNA news agency said on Thursday its army would complete plans in mid-August to fire four intermediate-range missiles over Japan to land near Guam amid increasingly heated rhetoric over the North's nuclear weapons program.

The South Korean official said member states of ARF reaffirmed it shared the common goal of the global communities to "achieve a complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea in a peaceful manner". And if North Korea's missiles prove no match for USA interceptors, Kim Jong Un might be chastened into thinking twice before conducting any more. It would be up to Kim whether the move is actually carried out.

The announcement, which included detailed maps, came after a week of an increasingly heated war of words between North Korea and the US that saw Trump threaten Pyongyang with "fire and fury".

The forum members also urged North Korea to comply with obligations stated in the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

North Korea threatened to launch ballistic missiles at waters off the coast of Guam earlier this week in an escalating war of words between the country and President Trump. That is close to half the distance between Guam and Hawaii, which sits about 3,960 miles away. That base and a USA naval base are home to about 13,000 American military personnel.

Guam, an unincorporated USA territory, is a strategic outpost about 2,100 miles south-east of Pyongyang. During World War II, brown tree snakes somehow slithered their way onto the island. In 1950, an act of Congress made it an unincorporated organized territory of the United States. But it wasn't known until now that the contacts have continued, or that they have broached matters other than USA detainees. However, Guamanians are still not allowed to vote in the US presidential election. Spain's colonial rule continued until the US took control in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. While already taking up 30 per cent of the island, the American military has been seeking to increase its presence by relocating to Guam thousands of Marines who are now based in Okinawa, Japan. Defence minister Itsunori Onodera said a missile fired towards Guam would represent a failure of the USA deterrence that protected Japan. As it is, the USA has a robust military presence in the region, including six B-1 bombers in Guam and Air Force fighter jet units in South Korea, plus other assets across the Pacific Ocean and in the skies above.

The island was first populated about 4,000 years ago by the ancestors of the Chamorros, still the island's largest ethnic group.

Such threats are why the Americans are on Guam to begin with.

About 40 percent of Guam's residents are Chamorros, the name for the native people. Its chief languages are English and Chamorro.

But, she concedes, "It definitely makes us a target". An attack or threat on Guam is a threat or attack on the United States. They are both managed under Joint Base Marianas. But they say the behind-the-scenes discussions could still be a foundation for more serious negotiation.
