Encounter breaks out in Kashmir's Shopian, 2-3 terrorists believed to be trapped

An encounter has broken out between terrorists and security forces in Shopian town of south Kashmir.

Police officials said that the security forces were conducting a search operation when the militants opened fire at them.

The encounter which began on Saturday evening and ended around Sunday noon left three local Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants and two soldiers dead.

The police said the encounter started after the forces came under from the holed up militants.

The gunfight triggered after contingents of Indian troops and police encircled the area on intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.

Khan said the three fighters belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen group and were from nearby villages.

Two soldiers were also killed in the encounter while six have been injured. They said when the security forces were moving towards particular area in the Asthan Mohalla in the village, militants resorted to indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. This prompted the security forces to wait till dawn while keeping a tight cordon around the area before launching a major strike.

The injured was taken to an Army hospital in Drugmulla where doctors stated his condition to be stable.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Top police official told Mirror that the killed terrorists are identified as Irfan Sheikh, Umar Majeed and Adil Malik.

Seven civilians sustained pellet injuries.

Two soldiers, who were killed in the encounter, are Sepoy Gawai Sumedh Waman and Sepoy Ilayaraja P, both 25 years old.
