Former Red Wings coach Bryan Murray dies of cancer at 74

Gary Bettman releases statement on passing of Bryan Murray

Bryan Murray, who spent three years as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings in the early 1990s, died Saturday after a three-year battle with cancer.

The Red Wings organization would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Ottawa Senators organization and all of Murray's family and friends during this most hard time. In Murray's four years behind the Senators bench, he led the franchise to four consecutive playoff berths.

But with playoff appearances came the playoff disappointments that now are standard in Washington and, after the Capitals won just 18 of their first 46 games in the 1989-90 season, they fired Murray and replaced him with his brother, Terry, causing some consternation in a family that included 10 brothers and sisters. He also coached the Senators to the Stanley Cup Final in 2007 and was inducted into the Sens' Ring of Honour in January.

During his final two seasons behind the bench, Murray became the first Red Wings coach since Tommy Ivan (1950-51, 1951-52) to produce back-to-back 40-win seasons.

When Fletcher worked for Murray in 2003 with the Anaheim Ducks, along with Tim Murray, they had a debate about a player with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. "As both head coach and general manager of the team (2001-2004), Bryan led our organization with class, dignity and charisma".

"He sort of tried to take the pressure off the team by doing stuff and yelling and screaming at the referees and having fun with them to alleviate some of the pressure that we had", Laughlin said.

Among the National Hockey League executives Murray mentored is Minnesota Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher. Hall of Famer Larry Robinson said Murray's death made for a "sad day for hockey". The Senators instead this time would end up beating the Buffalo Sabres in five games to secure their spot in the Cup Final. "Thank you for everything Bryan".

It says a lot when such a wide variety of people share their thoughts on a person's life, and it's apparent that Murray made many great impressions during his decades of work in the sport. "Touched a lot of lives".

"While his warmth and dry sense of humor were always evident, they were accompanied by the fiery competitiveness and determination that were his trademarks", Bettman said.

Laughlin said Murray was one of the first player-friendly coaches at a time when others were "flexing their muscles" as strict tacticians. Bryan's contributions to the game of hockey were outstanding, from his impact in Washington to his more recent service as a senior hockey advisor with the Ottawa Senators.
