Mo Farah bows out of track athletics with 5000m silver at World Championships

Ethiopia's Muktar Edris finds the answer to beating Mo Farah

Farah had won the 10,000m on the opening night - but it was not to be in the 5,000m.

In what was his last major track appearance before retirement later this month, the 34-year-old finished with a time of 13 minutes 33.22 seconds - almost one second behind gold-winner Muktar Edris of Ethiopia.

That Farah gave it his all is undeniable: likewise that Muktar Edris of Ethiopia was the better runner on the night, getting in front of Farah on the last lap and simply never surrendering.

America's Paul Kipkemoi Chelimo finished in 13 mins 33.20 secs to take bronze.

"Tactically, they worked as a team", said Farah.

Yet even in defeat, Farah demonstrated his champion's spirit as he fought back in the dying metres when it looked as if he would be shut out of the medals completely.

Coe said: "I was chatting to Usain before the medal ceremony and, slightly tongue-in-cheek, he looked at me and said, 'So what do you want me to do now, boss?'"

"I don't think there was any more I could have done".

"There's more need for us to demonstrate that we have some incredible talent, but the athletes have also got to realise that they've also got a sizeable part to play in this". That's what they did tonight, and the better man won on the day.

Johnson-Thompson tried to tap into the wave of emotion for Farah making her final attempt after the 5,000 race had started, but despite her efforts could not clear the bar.

But after the race, almost all of the attention went to Farah.

The British runner, 34, added a silver to the gold he won in the 10,000 metres at the London Stadium last week.

And in each of the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and the 2013 and 2015 World Championships, that has meant doubling up over the two longest track championship distances.

Farah will run in Birmingham next Sunday before ending his track career in Zurich.
