Nationals' Bryce Harper Leaves Game With Apparent Knee Injury

VIDEO: Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper suffers ugly-looking knee injury

Chris Stratton struck out a career-high 10 in 6 2/3 shutout innings, and the San Francisco Giants beat Washington 4-2 Sunday in the opener of a day-night doubleheader, the Nationals' first game following Bryce Harper's knee injury.

The All-Star right fielder, as a result of Saturday's fall at first base and hyperextension of his leg, sustained a significant bone bruise on the inside portion of the knee. "We were going to have to go after Zimmerman there instead of Harper, but we ended up going after the wrong guy".

Assuming Harper doesn't hit any snags in the rehab process, he could be looking at a return to the field sometime in mid- to late September.

The Giants (46-70) are almost 35 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, and the Nationals (68-45) are 15 games ahead in the National League East after a 3-2 win on Thursday at home against the Miami Marlins.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, "I don't know what happened really".

Harper is hitting.326 with 29 home runs and 87 RBIs in 106 games and 402 at-bats for the first-place Nationals. Rizzo said he was "optimistic" that Harper would be back this season.

Harper is expected to speak to reporters on Sunday afternoon.

Harper is now one of the leaders in the NL MVP race and is hitting.326 with 29 home runs and 87 RBI.

Harper, 24, is a National League MVP candidate. "You're just thinking, 'Please, Lord, don't let it be serious'". And shortly after the game starter, Harper's injury reminded the clubs of the danger of playing in harsh conditions. Harper is certainly someone the Nationals need in order to compete in October.

"Today was definitely one of those, dig-deep-and-see-what-you-made-of days", Jackson said.
