Ayodhya dispute: Apex court begins hearing pleas against HC verdict

Ayodhya dispute SC grants 3 months for translation of historic documents final hearing on Dec 5

The court gave the Uttar Pradesh government the responsibility of translating the entire gamut of oral evidence in the case within the next 10 weeks.

In an attempt to find an amicable solution to the protracted Ayodhya dispute, a three-judge bench headed by Justice Dipak Mishra heard the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute on Friday.

The top court in relation to this stated that the period fixed for the completion is final and that it will not grant any further adjournment.

MC Dhingra, the lawyer appearing for Shia Waqf Board in the Ayodhya case, while speaking to ANI on the same, said that the Shia Board has chose to leave the one-third land allotted to them, to avoid problems for both the religious denominations, in regard to their prayers.

Today, first all the records were translated into English for the court.

Earlier, in a major development in the issue, the Shia Waqf Board told the apex court that a mosque can be built near Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Senior counsel CS Vaidyanathan, representing Lord Ram Lalla and Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the UP government, asked for an early hearing of the matter, but senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Anoop George Chaudhari and Rajeev Dhavan, representing other parties, were not in favour of commencement of the hearing before January next year. Babur might have ordered Baqi to build mosque but it was Baqi who chose the site and having demolished the temple got the mosque built.

But the civil dispute over 2.7 acres is a separate one that has been on since 1961 when the Sunni Wakf Board took the matter to court.

The bench said the parties themselves would translate the required documents and in case of any dispute it would examine it at the relevant time. All parties involved had challenged the decision in the Supreme Court.

The apex court in its previous judgment had constituted a three-judge bench to hear a batch of petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict in the Ayodhya land dispute case from 11 August.

Notably, the Allahabad High Court in the year 2010 ruling said that the disputed land be divided into three parts - one-third to Ram Lalla, represented by the Hindu Mahasabha; one-third to the Islamic Waqf Board; and the remaining third to the Nirmohi Akhara. On July 21, Chief Justice JS Khehar had agreed to take early hearing after a plea filed by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy.
