Second NJ Transit train stalls at Penn Station in one day

The FDNY was on the scene after train #7240 was disabled around 4:45 p.m. due to overhead wire problems.

For several hundred thousand commuters on the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit - as well as Amtrak passengers who ride between Boston and Washington, D.C. - that means fewer trains during peak periods, the result of track closures to accommodate the repairs.

A NJ Transit train also derailed at Penn Station on July 6.

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it's cautiously optimistic after the first week of major repairs at Penn Station, the busiest train station in the country.

Amtrak train 98 stalled shortly before 11 a.m.in one of the Hudson River tunnels, traveling from Miami, Mike Tolbert said. "The train became disabled just west of the station". It led to the latest series of commuting delays in and out of New York Penn Station.

Amtrak officials said the first week of track work in Penn Station New York has gone "very well" and is even slightly ahead of schedule. A second train came at 5:05 p.m.to rescue the NJ Transit train.

Amtrak travel between NY and New Jersey was briefly suspended, but had resumed on Amtrak rails by 1:15 p.m. Some 600 people were stuck inside without air conditioning.

There have been no reported injuries, and passengers did not have to evacuate.

More than 90% of the trains heading into Penn were on time this week, Scot Naparstek, Amtrak's chief operating officer, said Friday.
