Communal violence over cow protection must be curbed sternly: Modi

'Communal violence in the name of cow' can't be tolerated: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for tough action against those who indulged in violence in India in the name of cow vigilantism.

Modi said some political parties were painting cow protection with communal colour and taking political advantages which does not benefit the country. This is what Narendra Modi pressurized on, said: "No one can take the law in his hands, will be punished severely".

Another Congress leader P.L. Punia said that the Prime Minister should send a strict advisory to the BJP ruled states in this regard so that such incidents do not occur. "State governments should take strict action against them [cow vigilantes]". Talking to ANI, Congress leader Oscar Fernandes said it is a "sad spectacle" that there is no peace in the country today.

Notwithstanding the PM's statement, the cow vigilantism and related lynching is likely to be key issue for the Opposition, which is also set to raise other issues like killing of farmers in police firing in Madhya Pradesh and the Kashmir unrest.

At an all-party meeting ahead of Parliament's monsoon session that begins on Monday, Modi told MPs that law and order was a state subject and as such the state governments needed to act strictly against those committing violence in the name of cow protection.

The issue has raised concerns as the targets of such violence have been minority members and Dalits.

That could possibly be why the prime minister simply put the onus of controlling cow vigilantes and bringing the guilty to justice to state governments.

Modi's comments at an all party meeting came at a time when investigating agencies were probing graft allegations against leaders of the Trinamool Congress and RJD. However, Kumar told reporters that it would have been very good had a consensus been reached on the candidate.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has also called a meeting of leaders of political parties in the House this evening at Parliament House.

Without mentioning India's military standoff with China, the Prime Minister asserted that all political parties stood united to ensure the "nation's safety and security after such concerns were raised by many leaders on recent developments".

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, Ministers of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and SS Ahluwalia also attended the meet. TMC had announced to boycott the meeting, amid recriminations between it and the BJP over recent violence in West Bengal.
