Trump admires Mrs Macron's 'good shape'

Trump on Friday proclaimed on Twitter that the US relationship with France is "stronger than ever" in a photo caption of Trump, wife Melania and the French leader and his wife before dinner at the Eiffel Tower on Thursday night.

"Trump telling France's First Lady "you're in such good shape" epitomises men toeing the line between compliment and sexual harassment", wrote Twitter user Alex Berg, a freelance video producer and writer who works on feminist and gender issues.

He also reportedly told her: "You're in such good shape. handsome".

French President Emmanuel Macron, on his part, said that he respected Trump's decision but reiterated France's committment to the accord.

The encounter happened during a tour of the Hôtel National des Invalides, a museum complex in central Paris that houses the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Footage of the moment shows Trump and Macron shaking hands as they walked and talked.

As Macron tried to pull away, Trump switched to an upward grip and pulled Macron in even closer before leaning over to give the French first lady a kiss on each cheek.

Trump's first handshake with French President Emmanuel Macron, back on May 25, was described as "fierce" by one columnist, with both world leaders strongly gripping one another's hand and clenching their jaws.

Trump praised her "nice smile" and told Vradkar on the phone that, "She has a nice smile on her face, so I bet she treats you well".

Because the White House released a transcript that initially excluded his admission, reporters chose to release the quote on their own.
