The Russian lawyer, who met with Donald Trump Jr after he had been told she wanted to provide him with incriminating information against Hillary Clinton, was accompanied by a Russian-American lobbyist thought to have formerly worked for Russian military intelligence.

A source familiar with the participants of the meeting confirmed to Reuters that Akhmetshin was in the room. Akhmetshin denied reports he has ties to Russian intelligence agencies.

Fox News host Sean Hannity told Donald Trump Jr.

"After pleasantries were exchanged, the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russian Federation were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton", Trump Jr. said in that statement.

Rep. Gallego said, "On July 11, Donald Trump Jr. released a series of emails regarding his meeting with a Russian government lawyer and an individual associated with Russian intelligence".

Akhmetshin denied to the Washington Post that he served as a Russian intelligence agent.

The president's son has tried to discount the meeting, saying he did not receive the information he was promised during the brief encounter.

Although Trump Jr. has acknowledged meeting Veselnitskaya, he did not disclose the attendance of Akhmetshin, a well-known figure in the capital's murky world of foreign influence peddling.

The June 9 meeting has become the focus of allegations that the Trump election campaign collaborated past year with a covert effort by Moscow to turn voters away from Clinton.

Trump Jr. pressed the Russian lawyer for evidence but Veselnitskaya said the Trump campaign would need to research it more. After that, Trump Jr. lost interest, according to Akhmetshin.

A lawyer for Donald Trump Jr. did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on whether his client would agree to appear before the committee.

She said she brought with her a two-page document, one small part of which involved alleged D.N.C. funding issues.

Goldstone said in an email to Trump Jr. that Veselnitskaya "offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father".

Mr Akhmetshin said the group's conversation was "not substantive" and he "actually expected more serious" discussion.

Appearing on CNN Friday morning, Democratic congressman Mike Quigley of IL insisted that Trump Jr.'s contact with lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya was proof positive of collusion with the highest members of the Russian government. Asked Friday about Akhmetshin, Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters: "We don't know anything about this person".

The Senate Judiciary Committee is one of several congressional committees investigating Russian meddling in the USA election.

Mr Browder added that Mr Akhmetshin was effectively Ms Veselnitskaya's "guide through the political corridors of power in Washington".
