Consultants throw cold water on U.S. doctor's 'magic potion' for Charlie Gard

The US doctor who has offered to treat terminally ill Charlie Gard has attended a meeting at Great Ormond Street Hospital to decide whether he should travel to America for therapy.

Charlie's parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates are now making their case in the High Court seeking a ruling allowing their 11-month-old son to travel to NY for experimental treatment.

Hirano's research focuses on mitochondrial diseases and genetic myopathies and he has treated others with conditions similar to Charlie's.

Michio Hirano, a professor of neurology at the Columbia University Medical Centre in NY, is scheduled to examine Charlie for the first time before discussing his condition with Great Ormond Street doctors and other medical experts.

As a result, a judge overseeing the latest stage of litigation has agreed that Charlies mum Connie can be present when experts meet to discuss Charlie's condition.

They do not believe that Charlie has any chance of surviving his critical illness and that life-support treatment for the child should stop.

Hirano says the therapy he is developing could improve the condition of Charlie who suffers from a form of mitochondrial disease.

China's economy grew 6.9% in second quarter
The two countries will also look to open China's market to US credit ratings firms and credit card payment services firms. In 2016, China's GDP grew 6.7 percent, which is its worst performance in the past 26 years.

At the end of June, the European Court of Human Rights rejected an appeal by Charlie's parents that he be allowed to undergo the experimental treatment in the U.S., following a similar ruling by the UK's supreme court.

The couple, who are in their 30s and come from Bedfont, west London, want Mr Justice Francis to re-open the case in light of the new evidence.

After receiving the letter, Great Ormond Street asked the High Court for a new hearing on Charlie "in the light of claims concerning possible other treatments". The hospital says Charlie should be allowed to die with dignity.

It has prompted a fierce debate around the world about medical ethics and whether the hospital treating the child or his parents should determine his fate.

Charlie Gard's mother has said she wrote to Pope Francis asking him to intervene, but did not request United States President Donald Trump's help, the Press Association reported.

He argued that if the couple were rich instead of "ordinary people" their child would be free to receive treatment in the US.
