Bride cancels $38000 wedding, invites homeless for dinner

American woman Sarah Cummins from IN told the Indianapolis Star she cancelled the wedding a week ago, but declined to give a reason.

Left with nonrefundable contracts and deposits, Cummins was stuck with the bill for a 170-person dinner reception.

Sarah Cummins, a pharmacy student at Purdue University in IN, called off her wedding and threw a party for the homeless. I called everyone, canceled, apologized, cried, called vendors, cried some more, and then I started feeling really sick about just throwing away all the food I ordered for the reception, ' Cummins told the outlet.

Ms Cummins said she decided that rather than throw away the food she would bring some goal to the event and contacted homeless shelters.

Cummins said her ex-fiance, whose mother died recently, had agreed to the solution.

A bride-to-be and her fiance called off their wedding, leaving thousands of dollars in decorations, materials, and food to simply go to waste.

Cummins and her mother will spend Saturday preparing the venue for the homeless guests, who will arrive by bus Saturday afternoon.

Everything will be the same as it would have been had the wedding not been canceled, Cummins said, except there will be no head table for the bridal party, no cake table and no gift table.

The painful break up, which took place a week before their wedding day, led her to take an altruistic step.

Cummins said if she's not too emotional, she plans to stay for the dinner with her mom and her two sisters. They leave for the Dominican Republic on Sunday.

For dessert, there's the wedding cake.

Cummins said it won't be all heartache when she looks back on her would-be wedding date.

According to the Indianapolis Star bourbon-glazed meatballs, goat cheese and roasted garlic bruschetta, chicken breast with artichokes and Chardonnay cream sauce are also on the menu.

'I will at least have some kind of happy memory to pull from, ' she said. "I've worked so many weekends and so much overtime to pay for this, I wanted to make sure it would be the flawless wedding", Cummins told the IndyStar.

"I'm going by myself".

"I'm happy through my grief and also Sarah's that she was able to make a selfless and very thoughtful decision in such a hard time", he said.
