Parilli was the SEC Player of the Year in 1950, when he finished fourth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. Parilli's 31 touchdown passes in 1934 were a Patriots record until Tom Brady threw a then-NFL record 50 throwing scores in 2007. In the 1952 draft, Green Bay selected the quarterback fourth overall out of Kentucky, where he was coached by Paul "Bear" Bryant. He was Joe Namath's back-up when the New York Jets won the Super Bowl in 1969.

Parilli's professional football career spanned two leagues, five teams, 15 years and 189 games played. He was an AFL All-Star for the Patriots in '63, '64 and '66. He played with the Packers and Browns and the CFL's Ottawa Rough Riders in the Fifties, then came to the fledgling American Football League, where he played on the Raiders' inaugural AFL team in 1960 and then with the Patriots.

A college football star as well, Parilli was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1982 before being inducted into Patriots Hall of Fame in 1993. He later coached six different Arena Football League teams.
