John Terry has been named the new captain of Aston Villa after completing his move to the Championship club.

Villa had been searching for a new centre back earlier this summer as manager Steve Bruce pursued a partner for James Chester - and he landed one of the coups of the summer so far.

Terry, a hero at Stamford Bridge and idolised in the "captain, leader, legend" banner, wore the armband for the Villans at Greenhous Meadow.

Real Betis have touched base with Aston Villa for the signature of French midfielder Jordan Veretout this summer.

Manchester United have announced that goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will spend next season on loan at Aston Villa. His side lost 2-1 to Shrewsbury.

Terry was a long serving captain at Chelsea, captaining the club since the 2004/05 season, before leaving for the championship. The former England Under-20 worldwide is expected to join the club on the remainder of their pre-season campaign which will see them travel to Germany.

However, Elphick struggled at Villa last season, and started just 20 of Villa's 46 league games, with many left disappointed by the centre back's performances in claret and blue.
