Pakistan launches offensive against IS near Afghan border

Referring to the recent visit of US Senators representing Defence Committee, he said that they were taken to the areas where the state had regained her writ by eliminating terror and they had expressed appreciations of the role of Pakistan's military. Twenty two terrorists were also killed.

Elaborating situation on the Line of Control, Asif Ghafoor said India is committing massive ceasefire violations on LOC to divert world attention from the grave human rights violations and indigenous struggle of Kashmiris in the Occupied Kashmir.

On June 4, Pakistan security forces had claimed killing over a dozen suspected ISIL fighters during a security operation in southwestern Balochistan province that was aimed at recovering a Chinese couple kidnapped by the terror group in May last.

Daesh has had more success in neighbouring Afghanistan where it controls small chunks of land, but has also faced tough resistance from the US-backed government in Kabul and local Afghan Taliban militants. During these operations 22 terrorists were killed in crossfire.

Codenamed Khyber-4, the military operation will target militant hideouts in what Major General Asif Ghafoor called "the most critical area in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata)".

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 27 major operations and 817 IBOs were carried out.

The ISPR chief lamented that the Indian army has the choice of opening fire on civilian areas whereas the Pakistan Army can not do that to Kashmiris across the LoC.

He said Pakistan forces had been exercising restraint but whenever reacted it was in retaliation to the unprovoked firing whereby directly engaging the Indian posts from where the fire was being originated.

Incidents of terrorism in Pakistan have shown a drop over the three-year period from 2014-2017, he said.

"The things are improving and we hope that these will further improve in the days to come", he said.

To a question, he said the Army Chief will take a final decision on the appeal of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jhadav at the earliest.

"There is no direct army involvement in the JIT", he asserted and said that it was working as mandated by the Supreme Court. "It is a sub-judice case and will go to court", he said. Out of the total, 53 executions had been carried out while 40 of them were undertaken during the on-going operation RUF.

Speaking on the Raymond Davis issue, he said that Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) was not the only institution involved in the matter.

Major General Ghafoor briefed the media today over ongoing security operations in the country and answered questions posed by journalists in attendance. He also couldn't resist a minor dig at Pakistan's troubled neighbor: "If the Afghan army were as capable as the Pakistan Army, then maybe the issue [of terrorism] would be resolved sooner", Ghafoor said.
