The hardware shuts out any view or sound of people physically near you, not many people own headsets yet, and interactions inside virtual settings are still limited.

Google is releasing a major update to its virtual reality platform, Daydream. As mentioned on Day 1, Google is working on a standalone VR headset that won't require a phone. That way any friends or family members hanging out in your home can see what you see.

You can already find thousands of 360-degree videos on YouTube that allows for the viewer to pan their smartphone around to pan around the video itself. That means that small groups of people can enter a viewing session, talking to each other via voice chat. Since then, developers have been scrambling to make social VR experiences explode into the mainstream, and things like Rec Room have made this possible on other headsets like the HTC Vive. And while not as full-featured as Facebook Spaces, YouTube VR's co-watching experience is the first step to making its Daydream VR platform more social. To support this, Google will be adding a 2D panel that will pop up within the virtual environment to bring Android accessibility.

All the new features are coming later this year. So, you can check notifications, see a web browser, and more while in VR.

Live 360-degree videos will be coming to the YouTube TV app, too, which should start rolling out over the summer - just in time to check out 360-degree concerts from summer festivals all from the comfort of your living room.
