Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz To Leave Office At The End Of June

20 May 2017, 11:53 | Winston Chapman

"That's a lot and it takes its toll", he told The Deseret News, shortly after announcing that he was not running for re-election in order to spend more time with his family.

The news, first reported by Politico, puts into motion a potentially uncertain special election process in Utah, where state lawmakers are in a stare-down with Gov. Gary Herbert over how to elect Chaffetz' replacement. A former aide told Reuters last month the congressman may run for governor of Utah in 2020, though no firm decision had been made.

Chaffetz is now less than six months into his fifth term representing Utah's Third Congressional District, and has served as the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee since January 2015.

Chaffetz's exit will accelerate internal jockeying among House Republicans to succeed him as the chairman of the high-profile Oversight Committee.

Chaffetz previously has not ruled out another run for public office at some point in the future.

Gov. Gary Herbert called the special election via a proclamation that spells out that state law gives him the ability to call a statewide special election "for any goal authorized by law" and designates the lieutenant governor to conduct it. This time, however, he'd be the top congressional watchdog for a Republican presidency.

Chaffetz said his last day will be June 30. Comey had reportedly indicated in a series of memos that Trump asked him to scale back his investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Sweden drops case but WikiLeaks' Assange is not in the clear
WikiLeaks says the ball is now in Britain's court after Sweden's decision to drop its rape investigation of Julian Assange. Today was the deadline for the public prosecutor's office to either renew the pan-European arrest warrant or lift it.

On Wednesday, Chaffetz announced that he planned to invite former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey to testify next week - just as a soon as he could get in touch with him. Founded in 1846, AP has covered all the major news events of the past 165 years, providing high-quality, informed reporting of everything from wars and elections to championship games and royal weddings.

President Trump fired Comey last week following which the administration officials provided multiple, conflicting accounts of the reasoning behind the dismissal.

Jason Chaffetz was a determined investigator of the Obama administration and of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was Secretary of State.

Chaffetz chairs the committee looking into the Trump's campaign's role in Russia's efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.

It was not immediately clear who will succeed him at the helm of the congressional oversight panel. "I hope whoever takes his place will do better than he did at a proper investigation of all that garbage with ties to Russian Federation". Mr. Chaffetz's departure casts uncertainty into what is next for the committee's investigations.

Herbert said he believes a primary and general election could be conducted fairly quickly, leaving Chaffetz's seat empty for two to four months. "Whoever they send, I'm going to be me, all right?"

Who is likely to takeover that post and what will that do to the investigation?
