USA to renew sanctions waivers on Iran Wednesday

19 May 2017, 09:20 | Taylor George

The United States has decided not to re-impose sanctions on Iran's Nuclear Programme.

The Trump administration said Wednesday that it will continue to waive some sanctions against Iran, a key aspect of the nuclear deal negotiated by the Obama administration and five other world powers.

The US Treasury Department Wednesday announced unrelated, new sanctions in connection to Iran's ballistic missile program.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Iran's actions were destabilizing the Middle East, and he accused Iranian officials of "assisting the brutal Assad regime". The US State Department announced a day earlier it would be signed, meaning old sanctions wouldn't be re-imposed and the nuclear deal will continue - at least for now.

Every 90 days, the US president must certify for Congress that Iran is fully compliant with the JCPOA to ensure that the economic sanctions can continue to be waivered. In turn, Ahmadi is Director of the Iranian group Shahid Bakeri Industries Group.

Stuart Jones, the top USA diplomat in charge of the Middle East, said the U.S.is still forming a "comprehensive Iran policy" that includes Iran's support for Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and militant groups in Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen.

While both the US State Department and the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency report that Iran is compliant with the nuclear deal, evidence provided last month by the Iranian Resistance shows that the Regime has simply moved their base of operations to a secret site, resumed working on advanced centrifuges, and refused access to independent inspectors. Separately, however, Washington also extended wider sanctions relief for Iran called for under the nuclear accord.

"The United States and its partners will continue to apply pressure on Iran to protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms for everyone in Iran", the State Department said in its report.

New sanctions also have been leveled on a Chinese-based network believed to be supporting Iran's ballistic missile program via "millions of dollars' worth of missile-applicable items".

China has long expressed its dissatisfaction with the U.S.' use of the sanctions weapon, which frequently affects Chinese individuals and companies allegedly linked to weapons or nuclear development in Iran or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Iran holds a presidential election on Friday with President Hassan Rouhani, a pragmatist cleric whose administration reached the nuclear deal, battling a conservative challenger and trying to convince voters he can deliver economic growth.

"We urge our partners around the world to join us in calling out individuals and entities who violate global sanctions targeting Iran's human rights abuses", Jones said.

On Tuesday, CNBC issued an extensive report on North Korea's nuclear work in which it quoted former Central Intelligence Agency agent Fred Fleitz, now with the Center for Security Policy, as saying there is "pretty credible information" indicating that North Korea and Iran have exchanged missile design and testing know-how in both directions. "Categorically", former Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman - who led the USA negotiating team at the Iran nuclear talks - said at a panel hosted by the Cato Institute on Tuesday, which included this reporter.
