US strike hits pro-Assad forces Syria

American warplanes operating in Syria carried out airstrikes against government forces near the Iraqi border Thursday, officials from the USA -led coalition battling the Islamic State confirmed.

Coalition planes struck pro-regime forces that were advancing inside a protected "deconfliction zone" north-west of the al-Tanf area, the military alliance said in a statement.

The U.S. -led coalition warplanes on Thursday struck one of the Assad regime's military sites in southern Syria near the border with Jordan.

According to David Martin, CBS News national security correspondent, the us attacked regime vehicles that had violated a deconfliction zone twice in three days. The commander chose to call in an airstrike after warnings were not heeded by the pro-Syrian government force, he added.

In a statement, the coalition said the strike had occurred "well inside" an established de-confliction zone northwest of the At-Tanf garrison, where British and United States commandos have been training and advising local forces fighting IS.

A deadly combination of human error, bad intelligence and an increasingly complicated battlefield led to the mistaken bombing of Syrian government troops by American and coalition aircraft in September. "Such actions that were carried out against the Syrian armed forces. this is completely unacceptable, this is a breach of Syrian sovereignty", he said.

The Syrian Observatory said most of the eight people killed in the strikes appeared to be "non-Syrian".

U.S. airstrikes targeting pro-Assad forces close to the Iraqi border have been branded "completely unacceptable" by Russian Federation.

In a statement on Twitter, Operation Inherent Resolve said the Russians attempted to get the convoy to turn back.

"A convoy going down the road didn't respond to numerous ways for it to be warned off from getting too close to coalition forces in al-Tanf", a Pentagon official said.

Rebel officials said earlier this week that hundreds of troops and militiamen were advancing into the sparsely-populated desert region, in an apparent attempt to halt recent rebel gains against so-called Islamic State (IS).

A day earlier, the US-led coalition struck Syrian forces near Tanf as the forces were advancing toward an area controlled by the US-led rebels, where British and U.S. bases are reportedly located. The Thursday strikes are the most direct attack against the Syrian military so far.
