20 May 2017, 10:18 | Taylor George

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles said he was barred from leaving the country Thursday as he planned to address a United Nations session in NY about the country's escalating violence. The opposition rejects that plan as another attempt by the president to tighten his grip on power, and opposition leaders are calling on Venezuelans to continue to take to the streets in protest.

This death has brought to 44 the number of people killed in Venezuela since the start of protests in early April.

Opposition supporters temporarily block trucks during a blockade in an avenue while rallying against President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas, Venezuela, May 15, 2017.

The sanctions freeze any assets the country's most powerful judicial figures may have in USA jurisdictions and lock them out of much of global banking.

Word of imminent new sanctions coincided with White House talks on Thursday between Trump and President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, Venezuela's neighbor. She said the order was one more example of USA attempts to destabilize Venezuela's government, adding that Maduro strongly backs the Supreme Court magistrates who are "victims of us imperial power".

"Members of the country's Supreme Court of Justice have exacerbated the situation by consistently interfering with the legislative branch's authority", he said.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley warned on Wednesday that if the situation was left to escalate it could lead to a major global crisis like in Syria. "I will not be able to attend the meeting with the (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights", Capriles said in a video posted online.

A senior US official warned of further action against "bad actors" if there are no changes in the country. The Organization of Americas States will hold an emergency ministerial meeting on May 31 to address the crisis. In February, the target was Vice President Tareck El Aissami, whom USA officials accuse of being involved in worldwide drug trafficking.

The Treasury Department has in the past sanctioned Venezuela n officials or former officials, charging them with trafficking or corruption.
