Turkey will act if Syria Kurds attack

The Latest: Turkish courts urged to apply Europe's standards

Turkey will not hesitate to carry out further operations like its Euphrates Shield campaign in northern Syria, or retaliate if it faces a threat from the YPG militia, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday.

The US has summoned the Turkish ambassador after violence erupted between protesters and Turkish security personnel in Washington on Tuesday.

'We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms, ' said Heather Nauert, a State Department spokeswoman. "We call upon the Turkish government to apologize immediately for the involvement of any officials", said the statement.

"As a result of the assault, 11 people and one police officer were injured", said Peter Newsham, Metropolitan Police Department chief.

"We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", he said yesterday. "This isn't Turkey. This isn't a third-world country, and this kind of thing can not go unresponded to diplomatically, and maybe in other ways".

Republican Sen. John McCain said the government should "throw their ambassador the hell out" of the U.S.

"You can not have that happen in the United States of America". We do not do this here. "It would be beneficial if this person is changed", Cavusoglu said.

The demonstrators who displayed placards saying "Erdogan supports ISIS" were calling on Trump not to welcome him in the US. Two people were arrested, one charged with assaulting a police officer, but it is unclear whether those arrested were protesters or Erdogan's security personnel. After their meeting, Trump praised Erdogan as a stalwart ally in the fight against the Islamic State group and the PKK, the Kurdish group that has been fighting Turkey and complicating US efforts to fight ISIS in northern Syria.

However, the State Department did say that the investigation will "hold the responsible individuals accountable". But in the USA, it is a protected right.

The clash happened Tuesday in Washington, D.C., near the home of Turkey's ambassador.

In video of that scene, recorded by Voice of America Turkish news service, Erdogan's bodyguard stands up from the Mercedes and appears to relay a message to another man who was positioned closer to the street level action.

Trump's approval, before the visit, of plans to arm the YPG as it advances towards Daesh's Raqqa stronghold had overshadowed talks between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, but Erdogan did not directly criticise the plan at the White House. Turkey insists that these YPG militants and their PYD political party are tied to the Kurdish insurgency in Turkey known as the PKK, which the USA, the European Union and Turkey all consider a terrorist organization.

Turkey believes the Kurds in Syria are linked to the PKK.

For their part, the Turkish Embassy blamed the violence on the protesters, the AP reported.
