Trump says he's 'very close' to naming an FBI director

The White House says President Donald Trump will be interviewing four potential candidates.

One source told Politico that Trump bonded with Lieberman in their interview for the position, and he was leaning towards the him in the immediate aftermath.

Since leaving office, Lieberman, a former CT attorney general, has taken a post as senior counsel at the New York-based law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres and Friedman LLP.

President Trump said Thursday that Joe Lieberman was his top choice to become Federal Bureau of Investigation director, filling the slot left open after Trump fired James B. Comey, his previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head, last week.

The memo only added to the furor surrounding Trump's sudden and controversial firing of Comey last week, which came amid the FBI's intensifying probe into Russian interference in the 2016 campaign and Trump campaign associates' potential collusion with Moscow officials. Trump has said he could name a successor before he departs Friday on his first overseas trip as president.

Lieberman lobbied from retirement to undermine former President Barack Obama's nuclear deal with Iran and is known for his close alliance with members of the Republican caucus like Sens.

Lieberman was first elected to the Senate in 1988.

The US media have been questioning alleged ties of the Trump campaign to Russian Federation and exploring the claims that Russian Federation may have influenced the 2016 presidential election. In 2000, he was Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore's running mate.

Among their concerns was Mr Lieberman's past praise of Mr Michael Flynn, Mr Trump's first national security adviser, who was sacked in February after misleading officials about his conversations with Russian officials. Mr Lieberman lost his 2006 Democratic primary bid but won Senate re-election as a third-party candidate. The White House declined to comment.

Lieberman told The Hartford Courant he was secretly considered for jobs under former President George W. Bush before he left the Senate in 2013.

The No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, said he was supportive of investigations in Congress but expressed concern about the "proliferation" of hearings.

President Trump likely believed that naming former Sen.

According to The Washington Post, attorney Mark Kasowitz of Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP (where Lieberman serves as senior counsel) represented Trump in challenging the 2016 report from The New York Times in which several women accused Trump of sexual assault.

Lieberman became an independent after CT voters defeated him in a Democratic primary, largely a result of his support of the Iraq war.

Joe Lieberman is also raising eyebrows as a proponent of criminal investigations of media outlets that publish classified information stemming from illegal hacking.
