That Mr.Erdogan has unfortunately been successful in stifling dissent in Turkey doesn't give him license to come to this country and attack one of its most basic, and cherished, freedoms.

The State Department said Wednesday that "violence is never an appropriate response to free speech, and we support the rights of people everywhere to free expression and peaceful protest".

Video and photographs of the incident show men in dark suits and ties, some holding Turkish flags, kicking and hitting protesters.

"This is the United States of America". Eleven people were injured, including a police officer, and nine were taken to a hospital, Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham said at a news conference on May 17.

The clash happened at the Turkish ambassador's residence Tuesday as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived after a White House meeting with President Donald Trump.

"The Turkish-Americans responded in self-defense", the statement said.

PRESIDENT TRUMP laid out the welcome mat this week for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the strongman apparently felt so much at home he thought it okay for his thugs to beat up peaceful demonstrators. The statement said that the USA communicated its concerns to the Turkish government "in the strongest possible terms".

"The actions seen outside the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC stand in contrast to the First Amendment rights and principles we work tirelessly to protect every single day".

Police said they had arrested two people for assault and identified them as United States residents, 49-year-old Ayten Necmi of NY and 42-year-old Jalal Kheirabadi of Virginia.

"We should throw the Turkish ambassador out of the country, we should identify those people that performed these unlawful acts of beating people up and they should be charged", Senator John McCain said on national television on Thursday morning. On May 17, the United States voiced its "strongest possible" concern to Turkey over the street brawl that left at least 11 people injured and appeared to include members of Erdoğan's security detail kicking people who were on the ground.

"The weapons provided will only be used in Raqqa and its south, they will absolutely not be used against Turkey, this will not be allowed", Cavusoglu said. They said they expected "conduct more appropriate" from Turkey, a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and a key US ally.

The biggest dispute between Turkey and the USA recently has been the Trump administration's plans to arm Kurdish Syrian militants fighting the Islamic State group. But Erdogan's government views the Syrian Kurdish group known as the YPG as an extension of a Kurdish terrorist organization that operates in Turkey.
