Shadow Brokers teases more Windows exploits and cyberespionage data

19 May 2017, 08:22 | Marlene Myers

The comments from the Shadow Brokers arrived just five days after WannaCry crippled businesses and organizations across the world, infecting at least 200,000 endpoints with file-encrypting malware (see WannaCry Ransomware Outbreak Spreads Worldwide).

Hacking group the Shadow Brokers was the key link in last week's WannaCrypt chaos, having released the NSA's hacking tools which allowed the malware to be weaponized so well. While later reports have questioned how much of a role the Shadow Brokers actually had in the leak of the exploits, what is known without a doubt is that the exploits in their possession did indeed originate from the NSA, as confirmed by the Snowden documents.

The blog post criticizes the global technology giants and their relation with the U.S government.

"In June, TheShadowBrokers is announcing "TheShadowBrokers Data Dump of the Month" service", the blog post published at steemit.com reads.

It claimed to have exploits for web browsers, routers, operating systems (including Windows 10), compromised data from banks and Swift providers and stolen network data from Russian, Chinese, Iranian, and North Korean nuclear missile programs.

Calling themselves the Shadow Brokers, the group first appeared in 2016 claiming that they had access to 75% of the U.S. cyber arsenal, which they offered to auction to the highest bidder.

The group claims that a screenshot it posted in January alerted the Equation Group that it had access to the EternalBlue exploit, and that this was responsible for Microsoft missing a security update in February.

Investors Catching Stocks Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD)
Finally, Norges Bank acquired a new stake in Advanced Micro Devices during the fourth quarter valued at approximately $50,722,000. COPYRIGHT VIOLATION WARNING: This story was originally reported by Chaffey Breeze and is owned by of Chaffey Breeze.

"TheShadowBrokers is launching new monthly subscription model", it explained. It adds, "Each month peoples can be paying membership fee, then getting members only data dump each month".

The WannaCry ransomware attack is said to be the biggest cyber attack of its kind in history.

The NSA has not commented on Shadow Brokers since the group emerged a year ago, or the contents of past leaks.

The Shadow Brokers said it made a decision to share screenshots from the NSA Equation Group's lost 2013 Windows Ops Disk in January, with the understanding that the Equation Group would then tell Microsoft and the vulnerability would be patched.

The rogue hackers have promised more details on their content-monetization strategy in June.

In August 2016, the group released a surprising sampling of spying tools and exploits that it claimed originated with the Equation Group. Microsoft president and chief legal officer Brad Smith said earlier this week the WannaCry attack used elements stolen from NSA cyber warfare operations. It also hinted that the blame for the WannaCry outbreak should go to Microsoft and the US government.

In her analysis of the Shadow Brokers' threat, independent security researcher Marcy Wheeler wrote that "simply by threatening another leak after leaking two sets of Microsoft exploits, Shadow Brokers will ratchet up the hostility between Microsoft and the government".
