Russian Federation probe reportedly has current White House advisor under scrutiny

20 May 2017, 12:25 | Melvin Schneider

"He was insane, a real nut job", Trump said, according to the document.

The document was read to the Times by one official, and a second official confirmed broad strokes of the discussion, the newspaper said.

In another development, The Washington Post is reporting that a current senior White House adviser is under scrutiny as part of an investigation into possible co-ordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Donald Trump reportedly told his Russian guests that firing Mr Comey had relieved the "great pressure" his administration was under because of the Russia investigation. "He was insane, a real nut job", Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official.

"As the president has stated before, a thorough investigation will confirm that there was no collusion between the campaign and any foreign entity", Press Secretary Sean Spicer told the Post in a statement.

The White House did not dispute the account of the meeting, according to the Times.

Earlier on Friday Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein defended a memo he wrote criticising former Mr Comey, telling law makers on Capitol Hill that Mr Comey had "damaged public confidence in the Bureau and the Department". Flynn and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort are central figures in the federal Russian Federation probe, and former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page's ties with Russian Federation are also under investigation.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday appointed a special counsel to lead the FBI's Russian Federation investigation - one day after The Times reported that Trump had pressured James Comey, the FBI director whom Trump fired on May 9, to drop the bureau's probe into Flynn.

Mr Comey had been running an inquiry into possible collusion between Russian Federation and Donald Trump's election campaign.

Mr Rosenstein during his briefing failed to clarify whether his memo dated May 9th was informed by his knowledge that Mr Trump was preparing to dismiss Mr Comey, members of Congress who were at the briefing said.

The latest report was published just as Mr Trump took off on a flight to the Middle East for the first leg of his first foreign tour as president.
