Palestinians injured during rallies for prisoners

19 May 2017, 10:51 | Taylor George

Led by jailed resistance icon Marwan Barghouti, more than 1,500 Palestinian prisoners began an open-ended hunger strike on April 17 to demand better conditions.

After 31 days, the mass Palestinian hunger strike continues, as prisoners reach critical point.

Despite massive repression, the struggle in solidarity with the hunger strikers and against the occupation is escalating.

An Israeli settler opened fire on a group of Palestinians throwing rocks at his vehicle, killing one and injuring a journalist. Some have managed to pressure Israel into releasing them, although some have been re-detained.

The demonstrations were held in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners now on hunger strike in Israeli prisons.

The settler opened fire after his vehicle was surrounded and stoned by Palestinian protesters when he attempted to drive through their demonstration near a military checkpoint in the northern West Bank yesterday.

Similar marches were witnessed across various West Bank districts.

According to the IDF, riot dispersal means were used to disperse the crowd, including the firing of warning shots into the air and the use of live fire. They were all treated at the scene. Likewise, Senator Bernie Sanders told last year's J Street conference that the Palestinians are being "forced to live under perpetual Israeli rule".

Soldiers fired stun grenades and tear gas canisters toward the residents, however, no injuries were reported.

Hundreds of Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli forces in several rallies Friday in support of hunger-striking prisoners with at least 25 demonstrators injured, officials said.

Since the June 1967 war when Israel conquered the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza and Syria's Golan Heights, more than 800,000 Palestinians have been arrested and imprisoned inside the 1948 borders of the state of Israel in clear and indisputable violation of worldwide law.
