Nadal beats Sock to reach Italian Open quarterfinals

19 May 2017, 09:10 | Joan Schultz

Seven-time champion Rafael Nadal is out of the Italian Open after a straight-set defeat by Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals in Rome.

However, the 23-year-old, who has only once before beaten the Spaniard, was not to be denied in Rome and produced a sensational performance to seal spot in the semi-finals.

The 4-6, 3-6 defeat to Thiem was Nadal's first of the season on clay, ending a run of 17 straight victories, and only the third and fourth sets he had dropped on his favoured surface in 2017.

The second set went with serve until the seventh game when Thiem broke and raced to the end 6-3.

But the Austrian dismissed both and saved another at advantage Nadal, evenutally coming through the game then to win 6-4, 6-3. One backhand victor from the back of the court with Nadal at the net was especially memorable.

He will face either world number two Novak Djokovic or Juan Martin del Potro in the semi-finals.

DHS has yet to confirm that the ban will be extended, but said it continues to "evaluate the threat environment". Britain quickly followed suit with restrictions on a slightly different set of routes.

It was then that Nadal finally had some joy against the serve, but Thiem kept his cool at 40-40, with the Spaniard forced to all corners of the court before being outdone by a thunderbolt forehand victor.

The 30-year-old Nadal has won consecutive clay-court tournaments in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.

The Spaniard will now focus on the French Open, where he will be aiming for a 10th title at Roland Garros.

Nadal regained some composure and managed to fight back to 5-4, but he could not prevent his rival from taking the set.

The unseeded towering American Isner battled into the Rome Masters semi-finals on Friday with a 7-6 2-6 7-6 win over Croatian sixth seed Marin Cilic.
