United's hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League suffered a major blow as they lost 2-0 at Emirates Stadium, second-half goals from Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck making the difference.

Mourinho has shifted his focus completely on United's Europa League campaign and hopes to win the competition, which is their only hope to participate in the Champions League next season.

The loss was a devastating blow to Jose Mourinho as his side conceded even more ground as they attempt to sneak into the top four.

"That's what he's waiting for".

The former right-back believes the displays this season have not been good enough from his former club, whose 25-match unbeaten run in the league came to an end as they lost 2-0 to Arsenal on Sunday.

"The manager gave me one task, to stay with him [Sanchez] and I seem to have done quite well but again we didn't win so it doesn't count as much".

He also stressed how the Europa League presents United with the opportunity to win two European trophies. "That's what I've done and when called upon I'll try my best to help the team". I'm really satisfied with my performance and the performance of the team, which is most important.

Michael Carrick is "desperate" to end the season - and perhaps his Manchester United career - with Europa League glory.

Replying to a question that it was his first defeat to bitter rival Arsene Wenger, Mourinho said: "It's the first time I leave Highbury or Emirates and they (Arsenal fans) are happy".

"Herrera played every game".

The Gunners were in desperate need of a win after being humbled in the North London Derby last week and responded with a concerted effort which will go some way towards appeasing their disgruntled fans.

"But today I tried to win".

Spain worldwide Herrera believes it is imperative his side secure their place in the final, as they bid to move a step closer to Champions League qualification, although he knows they will not have it all their own way against Celta.

The two clubs have arguably had the most defining rivalry of the Premier League era in the past, with numerous bust-ups between players and staff on both sides during regular ill-tempered clashes.
