Michigan DNR offers tips for safe boating

Michigan DNR offers tips for safe boating

- Wear a personal flotation device, better known as a life jacket, while on the water. During National Safe Boating Week, the U.S. Coast Guard and its Federal, State, and local safe boating partners encourage all boaters to explore and enjoy America's attractive waters responsibly. According to Virgil Chambers, Executive Director of the National Safe Boating Council, "Thousands of people would be alive today had they taken the simple precaution of wearing a life jacket when they went out on the water".

Members of the public are invited to join with members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, and people around the world to raise safety awareness and to help set a new world record for Life Jacket World Record Day.

The DNR also suggests making sure the boat is properly equipped.

- File a float plan.

Stay alert while boating as well.

- Carry a marine radio or cell phone.

"Much like wearing a seatbelt, putting on a lifejacket during or after an accident happens is too late", said Mike Baron, the recreational boating safety specialist for the Ninth Coast Guard District.

I encourage all Americans who participate in boating activities to observe this occasion by learning more about safe boating practices and taking advantage of boating safety education opportunities.
