McCain: Throw Turkish ambassador 'the hell out' of US

20 May 2017, 09:48 | Taylor George

John McCain called for the Turkish ambassador to the U.S. to be thrown out of the country on Thursday amid growing anger over the violent beating of protesters that took place outside of the Turkish embassy in Washington earlier this week.

The State Department also says that it summoned Turkish Ambassador Serdar Kilic to discuss the altercation.

The bodyguards of Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan got into a fight with protesters in the nation's capital, and the whole thing was caught on video.

Two people were arrested, one charged with assaulting a police officer, but it is unclear whether those arrested were protesters or Erdogan's security personnel.

Sen. Patrick Leahy's tweet said "We've got to come back to American values".

The Turkish Embassy in a statement blamed the violence on demonstrators, stating they were "aggressively provoking Turkish-American citizens who had peacefully assembled to greet the president. There is no excuse for this kind of thuggish behavior", McCain said on his Twitter account.

Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevült Cavusoglu, said McGurk shows a strong support for the People's Protection Units (YPG), and to the Kurdistan Workers" Party (PKK), which Ankara had declared outlawed and terrorist, so "it would be beneficial if this person is replaced, ' he said. "And this kind of thing can not go unresponded to diplomatically".

Trump administration confirms renegotiation of NAFTA
President Donald Trump's threats to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement are coming to fruition. Trump's decision to start the 90-day period comes a few weeks after he threatened to pull out of NAFTA.

The U.S. State Department condemned the attack as an assault on free speech and warned Turkey that the action would not be tolerated.

"Erdogan's aggression against Kurds in Syria and Iraq; mass arrests of the HDP leadership; illegal economic blockade of Armenia; arrest of record numbers of journalists", were among the issues listed on the protestors' Facebook page.

On Tuesday, a group of about two dozen protesters gathered outside the Turkish embassy to protest the Erdoğan regime, specifically his treatment of Turkey's Kurdish minority.

In a statement Wednesday, Washington police said the incident outside the Turkish embassy stood "in contrast to the First Amendment rights and principles we work tirelessly to protect each and every day".

Clashes broke out when a group of male and female protesters began chanting anti-Turkish slogans as Erdogan, who had earlier met President Donald Trump at the White House, arrived.

This is not the first time that Erdogan's entourage has been embroiled in a physical fight with protesters on US soil.

"After all, they violated American laws in the United States of America, so you can not have that happen in the United States of America".
