Man who ran over pedestrians was 'hearing voices'

19 May 2017, 07:36 | Taylor George

Several people were injured and one was killed when a speeding auto drove through Times Square on Thursday around lunch time. She graduated past year from a high school in Portage, Michigan.

Officials said Rojas served in the US Navy but was discharged after disciplinary problems.

NY mayor Bill de Blasio (left) said: "Based on the information we have at this moment, there is no indication that this was an act of terrorism".

Rojas initially tested negative for alcohol, but more detailed drug tests are pending, according to officials.

The speeding auto jumped the sidewalk on the west side of 7th Avenue at 42nd Street and struck several pedestrians before crashing at the northwest corner of 45th Street, police said.

"We heard a bang and looked out to see the vehicle crashed just outside our building", she said.

An 18-year-old woman was killed and at least 22 people were injured when a speeding auto plowed into pedestrians, city officials said.

A week ago, Rojas was arrested and charged with pointing a knife at a notary, whom he accused of stealing his identity.

Rojas went running through the street before he was subdued by police and bystanders, and taken into custody. After his arrest, he told police he was "hearing voices" and expected to die, two law enforcement officials said.

City officials last night said that the driver involved in the incident had been arrested in 2008 and 2015 for drink driving and earlier this month for menacing. Faisal Shahzad, a naturalised American and Taliban-trained militant, later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment. A neighborhood friend in the Bronx, Harrison Ramos, said Rojas wasn't the same when he came back from the Navy in 2014.

In the Bronx, neighbours of Rojas was a friendly man who had been having problems. Police said he was going south on 7th Avenue then made an abrupt U-turn and jumped a curb.

Rojas enlisted in the Navy in 2011 and was an electrician's mate fireman apprentice. The U.S. Navy veteran had been arrested on two prior occasions for driving while intoxicated.

"There were a lot of people out, enjoying the good day, and then I heard screaming and the vehicle running over bodies", she said.

Annette Proehl, of Pennsylvania, was in Times Square with children on a field trip when she heard the screeching tires of the vehicle and people screaming. Her name was Alyssa Elsman and she had been visiting from MI with her family.

She graduated past year from Portage Central High School. "Every interaction I had with her was positive", school principal Eric Alburtus told the Grand Rapids station.

Elsman also has a 16-year-old brother, the relative says, but he is believed not to have been at the scene.

Minutes before her death, Elsman shared a picture of Times Square on her Instagram story. "She was bright. She was amusing".
