Macron to visit Merkel in first foreign trip as French president

Emmanuel Macron 39 and his wife Brigitte 64 were mobbed by fans as they went to vote at the polling station in Le Touquet this morning. He has won with 65.5 per cent of the vote

"[Le Pen] will not be able to have many lawmakers at the legislative elections because she does not have any allies (except for [Nicolas] Dupont-Aignant) and lost her credibility", di Borgo said. Mr Macron has promised that half of those candidates will be new to elected politics, as he was before Sunday.

The newly elected French president set out plans in his manifesto to introduce a "Buy European Act" which would effectively restrict the ability of companies operating mainly outside of the bloc to access public procurement deals.

Freshly elected to the French presidency, Emmanuel Macron now faces an equally hard Act II: securing the parliamentary majority he needs to make good on his campaign promises to lift France out of economic gloom.

Macron, who appeared with current President Fran├žois Hollande at a World War II remembrance ceremony, announced a visit to Germany and a name change for his liberal political movement, which when translated into English was called Forward but will be called Republic on the Move.

At 39, the pro-EU former investment banker will become France's youngest-ever president when he is inaugurated next weekend after crushing far-right leader Marine Le Pen in a run-off vote on Sunday. It also marks decades of peace in western Europe, something Mr Macron made a cornerstone of his campaign against Ms Le Pen's brand of populism. Le Pen campaigned for France to leave the 28-nation European Union and drop the shared euro currency in favor of reinstating a new French franc. Sylvie Goulard, a French deputy to the European Parliament, said Macron would make Berlin his first official visit, with perhaps a stop to see French troops stationed overseas as well. Ferrand also said the names of Macron's 577 candidates in the legislative elections would be announced this Thursday.

In addition, 19,000 wireline workers and DirecTV technicians in California, Nevada and CT are preparing for a strike as well. The CWA threatened the move could disrupt "a large number of retail stores" across the United States over the weekend.

His announcement appeared to take the president-elect's camp by surprise.

But National Front vice-president Florian Philippot said Ms Le Pen remains the "uncontested" leader of the party even after her heavy defeat.

"This Socialist Party is dead, it is behind us", Valls added Tuesday.

The scant coverage from mostly French-language media estimated that the demonstrators calling for Macron's resignation numbered in the thousands.

Michael Roth, Germany's deputy foreign minister, applauded Macron's win but said the result was marred by the fact that 11 million people in France voted for Le Pen.
