Koeman not confident Barkley will sign new deal

HALEWOOD ENGLAND- MARCH 16 Ross Barkley and Ronald Koeman during the Everton FC training session at USM Finch Farm

Koeman revealed last week that the 23-year-old midfielder would be sold this summer if he did not put pen to paper on an extension by this weekend.

"No, because it's a long time that he is thinking about his future", Koeman said.

"It is after the game, on Monday - then we will know it", Koeman told reporters regarding Barkley's situation. "Even when he stays, there will be more competition for him next season".

When asked if he feels confident that Barkley could stay, Koeman responded "No", before continuing: "It's a long time that he's thinking about his future but OK, I'm not anxious because I like to work with players who like to stay".

"I spoke to the player, the board spoke to the player and his agent".

He also believes Everton can have a strong team next year if they do business in the summer window, though he would not divulge any of the club's plans.

RK: "We want to finish strong". That means that you like to keep the player. "Certainly for Everton they need a bit more freshness in their team and maybe Ross [Barkley] does, in terms of getting a new club, having to earn a place in a team and not have the comforts of being at home and living in his hometown. I don't imagine he will get the games he needs".

'I think we have the same picture and that is to improve the squad'.

Everton's season concludes with Sunday's Premier League trip to London to face Arsenal and asked on Friday whether there was any update on Barkley's future, Koeman said: "I don't know".
