"If people have hospital or GP appointments they should attend unless told otherwise".

"It's why we are putting £2 billion [$2.6 billion] into cyber-security over the coming years and, of course, created the National Cyber Security Centre".

On Monday NHS Digital said it had posted a patch to prevent such an attack on 25 April and that the WannaCry incident would have been prevented if all NHS organizations had installed the patch on their systems.

A statement released by the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on Monday said: "We can confirm that the radiology services affected by the national cyber attack at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital have been restored".

"This ransomware attack is a wake-up call to all Australian businesses to regularly back up their data and install the latest security patches", Mr Tehan said.

The virus is then able to encrypt files and block user access to them, displaying a pop-up window onscreen telling users they have been blocked and demanding payment.

The attack has also hit 150 countries around the world since Friday.

Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth was unaffected by the attack.

HSE staff are being asked to turn on but not log onto their PCs for two hours this morning to allow checks to take place, and also to think before they click. I would like to thank all of the NHS staff who are working round the clock to rectify this and keep any impact to an absolute minimum.

Wainwright warned the healthcare sector "in many countries" was particularly vulnerable, but that all organizations should ensure they prioritise cyber security and update their systems.
