French government resigns in post-election formality

PARIS Supporters of Emmanuel Macron leader of the En Marche! movement celebrate in front of the Louvre Museum following the announcement of the results of the French presidential election on Sunday. Mr Macron was elected president in a resounding victo

Emmanuel Macron's supporters watch the president-elect speaking on a giant screen at the Louvre museum where Emmanuel Macron is planning to celebrate, on May 7, 2017 in Paris.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent France's President-elect Emmanuel Macron a telegram to congratulate him on his election victory and told him Russia was ready for constructive work on bilateral and global issues, the Kremlin said on Monday.

He did emphasize explicitly that he was "aware of the anger, doubt and anxiety" felt by many people in France, and that they had expressed those feelings in their vote.

As reported by Reuters, Macron's elections is supposed to bring relief for European allies that had feared the election of far right candidate Le Pen. Le Pen, 48, had called for a temporary ban on immigration, a referendum to leave the European Union and replacing the Euro with the Franc, the old French currency.

In that respect, Le Pen has won.

If Macron's party performs poorly, he could also be forced to form a coalition, a common occurrence in many European countries but something very unusual in France. "It is my responsibility to hear them".

Ms Le Pen's result was both a personal best and a best for her National Front party in a national election.

He warned that income inequality and other "fundamental causes of anti-establishment politics" continue to "encourage scapegoat economics - a desire to blame an external group for economic problems". Rachline said Le Pen will lead the opposition to Macron. Police sprayed tear gas and detained dozens of protesters holding running demonstrations through eastern Paris after the election results came out.

Congratulatory messages poured in from overseas.

In his victory speech, Macron vowed to "rebuild the relationship between Europe and the peoples that make it".

Even though Macron had never ran for or held elected office before, his victory has made him the youngest President of France's Fifth Republic so far. Candidates from mainstream parties that alternated to govern the country in the past four decades were eliminated in the first round. His startup political movement - optimistically named "En Marche!".

As the day began, French voters faced a stark choice.

"I'm so happy, it feels so good!"

Speaker of Parliament Andrej Danko (SNS) sees Macron as a new hope for uniting the EU. "Today, I'm proud to be French". "Now we have the legislative elections and it will be a bit complicated to really change something".

He said that a new page was being turned in French history.

However, his challenge remains in energising an increasingly apathetic electorate, for whom his centrist platform offers little else except an alternative to Le Pen.

Here's everything you need to know about his success, and what lies ahead.
